A visit to the zoo

Everyone slept in this morning, which was glorious!  We were all in need of a good night’s rest.

I had read some reviews of this campground stating that you could hear airplanes flying over all day long, and while we didn’t hear them all day, Idid hear a few in the very early hours of the morning. It’s a peculiar feeling to be so far out in nature with clear skies and a moon shining bright, yet also so close to being connected to the rest of the world by aircraft zipping over that can make it from one destination to another in seemingly lightning bolt time.

After breakfast, the kids zipped off into the woods to do their Junior Ranger work of collecting trash and recycling that others have left behind.  Seb’s greatest find was a hefty hatchet!

Today’s agenda was a trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo.We had acquired a couple of tickets at a benefit auction we attended a few months ago, so it made perfect sense to build a visit into our itinerary. The kids were excited to see so many different animals and sea life up close, and they sure got in a lot of steps today! My phone tells me I walked over 5 miles today!

All are nestled into bed now... I’m sure they’re dreaming of lemurs and those cute clouded leopard cubs (Rukai and Kansas) that are only 2 months old.

Here are a couple of pics from the day:

Day 2/37

Mercy me! The adventure begins...

Kirsten here... So grateful to be sitting on my comfy bed in our pop up after what seemed like a day that would never end this way (in a camper).

Preparing for a journey like this brought with it a few unforeseen circumstances that delayed our departure til almost 5:30 PM!!! We had hoped to leave early in the AM - I even had breakfast and lunch packed for the kids to have on the road.  Needless to say, they ate both of those meals at home, and their packed bento boxes became their dinner on the road.

The weather was not in our favor, as it poured most of the day in Lancaster. That meant closing up the camper, which was parked in our driveway, racing against the drops of rain, and Tim trying to install the new tires and the propane tank cover in the rain. It also meant trying to pack everything in just the right nooks and crannies of the camper, cargo carrier and van - like a huge jigsaw puzzle.

Our dear child #3 insisted on a haircut before we left, much to his mother’s chagrin, so Tim whipped out the shears and gave him a new do, taking off inches and inches of soft, blonde locks. Then we had a bit of a scare with Kai, just as we were finally nearing our departure time, when he swallowed a Canadian quarter.  Tim was right nearby, so was able to respond almost immediately, but Kai ended up being his own hero, as he pushed forcefully on his trachea to dislodge the coin, causing it to propel from his mouth (along with his lunch :() and allowing him to breathe again.

That was when this mama doc lost it. In that awfully intense and scary moment, I broke down in tears after I saw that he was OK - no Heimlich maneuver needed, no call to 911, no trip to the ER, no endoscopy and no watching his poop for days or weeks to see if he would pass it. Thank goodness!!!

While it was a terrible experience for all 6 of us to see little Kai go through that, it did cause us allto pause and regroup, to get ourselves together again and finally get out the door shortly afterwards.

I have to say I was proud of our tribe on the road- we certainly had our moments - but we only had one stop for a potty break, the kids read books, ate their bento box lunches turned into dinners, and we discovered a new podcast (Molly of Denali), which the kiddos all seemed to love.

We arrived in just a little over 4.5 hours - not badfor 270 miles hauling a pop up.  We missed the PIttsburgh traffic - I guess one blessing of leaving so late!  We also got to drive into a beautiful sunset for the second half of the trip, which provided the opportunity to talk to the kids about the sun setting in the west.

When we got to Raccoon Creek State Park and found our campsite, it was a total mudslide.  Ugh! It had rained heavily here before we arrived, and the campsite suffered for sure.  We decided todrive around and look for a different vacant site, even though it was approaching 10:30 PM. And we found it!  No close neighbors to disturb, a relatively flat pad, shade, and no mud!  So we snatched it up and set up camp.

The two youngest fell asleep in the car listening to bedtime stories, Seb helped us set up, and Maya brother-sat til it was a time for her to come in and go to bed.

So thankful for a safe and dry camper and a mud-free campsite.  Even more thankful for Timmy, who got us here safely after a VERY LONG DAY. And super thankful for healthy kids, who I will love on extra hard tomorrow when they wake up.

Day 1/37 on the books!

Getting ready for the big trip!

We are heading out tomorrow on our long journey, so today is filled with chores and packing!

We have a new bear-proof 7 day cooler and a black stone griddle, which I am super excited about. (See the photo below of me giving the griddle a test run.)

The van has a new timing belt, spark plugs and power steering overhaul, and the camper has brand new tires (blew one on the highway on the last trip, so wanted to start the 3000 mile journey with fresh tires), a new battery, reflective covers for the bunk ends, and some modifications inside to make it the most efficient use of our space for this long journey. We also have a hand crank washing machine, which will be a great family activity to keep our laundry clean along the way! ;)

We are all excited (and maybe a bit stressed), the emotions are running high around here, and I am repeating the mantra in my head “and all will be well, and all will be well”.  Thanks for your prayers as we finish up the final preparation details and head out on this JM Family adventure tomorrow!  We’ll try to do our best to post as we go!

Harold Parker State Forest by Seb

After leaving Acadia at 9:30 AM, we arrived early at Lorraine campground at 4:00 PM. Mom didn't even realize our campsite was across from a basketball court and all of us kids + dad love basketball as you can see here. In our 2 days and 2 nights there we played a lot of basketball. After that we collected caught and abandoned bobbers/hooks then went to sleep. The next morning we went to Boston. Then the next morning we left. Here are some photos:

The first thing i touched was a sea cucumber. It was very slimy, but who cares. Diver Ed used sea cucumber slime to spike a boy's hair. it was really funny--everyone laughed.

Acadia National Park part 2

Our first day at Acadia National Park we went to otter cove - there was a lot of rockweed and barnacles but no otters ☹️. After venturing to otter cove we went into town (Bar Harbor)  and looked around then got ice cream. The next day we did diver Ed. We got to pet many different kinds of sea life. After that we went to the sand bar and had a short stay cause high tide came quick. On Monday we drove up mt. Cadillac. Also I tripped
and got a bad cut. Also I recommend you read the next post Harold Parker State Forest.

Acadia National Park part 1

https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1oHp1SaxOpbKNgvaEVINBNfFM1-t3K4xG

Coming to Acadia National Park I wasn’t sure if I was going to have fun.But my mind changed pretty quick; Acadia is so much fun. You can go to tide pools or go to otter cove, otter point, seal cove and many more places. The drive there was five and a half hours plus stops from VT, so we went really far. Maine itself is beautiful, but Acadia just makes it more beautiful. We arrived at around 9:30 pm, oops a little late. So us kids got to bed late. If you want to learn more about our trip to Acadia National Park, read upcoming part 2. Before I say bye, here are a few pictures. -Seb
